Sega and Sports Interactive have canceled Football Manager 25 across all platforms after facing significant development challenges, marking the first time since 2004 that the series will skip a release year. Despite promising it would bring major technical and visual advancements, the transition to the Unity Game Engine proved difficult, particularly in enhancing player experience and interface. The decision followed extensive discussions with Sega and was included in Sega Sammy Holdings’ latest financial update.
Sports Interactive confirmed that there will be no updates for Football Manager 24 for the upcoming season, citing that resources needed to focus on the next release. The FM25 had already faced two delays, the latest being set for March 2025, before the ultimate cancellation was announced. Now, the team is redirecting efforts toward Football Manager 26, set for its usual November release.
In their blog post, Sports Interactive expressed gratitude to pre-order customers and offered refunds, apologizing for the disappointment. They noted that although progress had been made in many areas of the game, the overall player experience and interface did not meet their standards. The developers are now focusing on improving the next installment to ensure it meets quality expectations.
