Hezbollah leaders have condemned the Israel-Lebanon Framework Agreement signed in Washington, labeling it “null and void” and an infringement on Lebanese sovereignty. They view it as a potential catalyst for civil unrest, with Hezbollah’s deputy leader, Naim Qasem, referring to the agreement as humiliating and threatening to link Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon to the disarmament of Hezbollah. This, he asserts, crosses a critical boundary.
The agreement, which emerged from talks aimed at promoting peace and potentially involving Lebanese forces taking control of certain areas from Israel, has been met with strong backlash from both Hezbollah and its allies. Lebanese parliament speaker Nabih Berri called it provocative, while Hezbollah lawmakers accused the Lebanese government of capitulating to American and Israeli influence.
Amidst heightened tensions, reports indicate that Israel is preparing for potential attacks by Hezbollah that could undermine the agreement. Protests erupted in support of Hezbollah, denouncing the accord, although some, like MP Samy Gemayel, expressed support, portraying it as a step toward peace and a recognition of Lebanon’s rights.
International reactions, including from Yemen’s Houthis, also warned of dire consequences for Lebanon based on this agreement.
