A former University of South Florida student, Hisham Abugarbieh, has been charged with first-degree murder for the deaths of his roommate, Zamir Rimon, and his girlfriend, Nahida Bristi, both doctoral students from Bangladesh. Rimon’s body was discovered on the Howard Frankland Bridge, while Bristi remains missing following their disappearance on April 16.
Abugarbieh, 26, was detained after officers responded to a domestic violence call at his parents’ home, where he initially barricaded himself before surrendering. He faces multiple charges, including illegally removing a corpse and tampering with evidence, and was denied bail during his first court appearance.
Family members revealed that Rimon and Bristi were considering marriage. The university has expressed deep sadness over Bristi’s disappearance and called for justice. Abugarbieh had prior misdemeanor charges and domestic violence complaints, and he was previously enrolled but is no longer a student. An autopsy on Rimon’s body is underway to determine the cause of death. The search for Bristi continues, and authorities request anyone with information to come forward.
