A former South Carolina court clerk, Mary Rebecca “Becky” Hill, pleaded guilty to multiple criminal charges related to her actions during Alex Murdaugh’s murder trial. In Colleton County Circuit Court, she was charged with obstruction of public office, perjury, and two counts of official misconduct for showing sealed court exhibits to a photographer and lying about it. Hill accepted a one-year suspended sentence and expressed shame for her actions, stating there was no excuse for her mistakes.
During Murdaugh’s six-week trial—where he was convicted of murdering his wife and son—Hill managed jurors and court exhibits, and her behavior raised suspicions, especially regarding juror influence. Evidence emerged that she shared graphic crime scene photos with the media, violating a judge’s order to keep them sealed and lying about it in court.
Hill also faced additional misconduct charges related to accepting nearly $12,000 in bonuses and promoting her book about the trial while in her official role. She resigned in March 2024, citing public scrutiny and a desire to spend more time with family.
