Terry Leslie, the former director of the Campbell County library in Wyoming, was fired amid a controversy over books with sexual content and LGBTQ+ themes. Following her termination in 2023, Leslie filed a lawsuit claiming her First Amendment rights were violated because of pressure to remove the materials from the library. She reached a settlement, agreeing to pay $700,000 while maintaining her stance on the importance of free speech. Leslie’s dismissal was reportedly influenced by complaints from residents rather than performance issues, according to the county. This case highlights ongoing tensions in conservative regions regarding library content and discrimination against LGBTQ+ individuals. Leslie’s attorney emphasized that the settlement reinforces First Amendment rights and cautions public bodies about their constitutional obligations. Leslie plans to continue with another lawsuit against three individuals who opposed the books.
