Malian Defense Minister General Sadio Camara was killed in an attack on his home, according to military officials and other sources. The attack is part of a broader offensive by jihadists and separatists who have gained control over various towns and military bases in Mali. This coordinated wave of assaults injured at least 16 people across several cities, including the capital, Bamako.
The separatist group Front for the Liberation of Azawad (FLA) claimed that Malian troops and Russian mercenaries withdrew from Kidal after a peaceful agreement following the assault. This marked a significant shift, as it was the first instance of cooperation between separatists and the Islamic extremist group Jama’a Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), which also claimed responsibility for the recent attacks. Analysts noted this coordination indicates a new level of collaboration between these factions.
Mali’s military reported pursuing the attackers, while authorities imposed a three-day curfew in response to the violence. The Economic Community of West African States condemned the assaults and called for regional solidarity against the growing extremist threat. Analysts suggested the attacks reflect a significant failure for Russian mercenaries in maintaining security, and warn that the conflict could worsen with rising extremist activity and civilian casualties.
