After two years of renovations, the first and second floors of George and Martha Washington’s Mount Vernon home are reopening to the public as part of a $40 million preservation project. Key aspects of the renovation include a new HVAC system, structural repairs, improved drainage, and the restoration of Washington’s bedroom. While the project isn’t fully complete until October 2026, visitors can now access previously closed areas.
Doug Bradburn, president of George Washington’s Mount Vernon, emphasized the meticulous restoration efforts that aimed to accurately recreate the mansion’s historical integrity. The ongoing work includes restoring the mansion’s basement to its appearance in 1799, which will remain closed until the full completion of renovations in 2026.
Over 400 subcontractors are involved in the project, addressing issues like termite damage and structural weaknesses. Among discoveries during the restoration were 18th-century artifacts, including glass bottles and a hidden fork from Martha Washington’s closet. A gala to celebrate the basement’s opening is planned for October 2026.
