Deloitte Australia will refund 440,000 AUD ($290,000) paid by the government for a flawed report riddled with errors, some possibly generated by AI. The report, which reviewed automated systems in the Australian welfare sector, was published in July and criticized for incorrect citations, including fabricated quotes from federal judges and non-existent academic works.
Chris Rudge from the University of Sydney identified numerous errors, including a fictitious book attributed to a colleague. He emphasized the seriousness of the misquotes, which could mislead the government regarding legal compliance. Although Deloitte acknowledged inaccuracies, they stated the issue was resolved with the client and did not clarify if AI errors contributed.
An updated version of the report disclosed that Azure OpenAI was used in its creation, though the main content and recommendations remained unchanged. Australian Green Party Senator Barbara Pocock called for a full refund, citing inappropriate AI use and significant misrepresentation.
