Kiev authorities stated on Monday that Russia is linked to the assassination of former Ukrainian politician Andriy Parubiy, who was shot eight times in Lviv on Saturday. The suspect, arrested early Monday, allegedly disguised himself as a delivery worker. National Police Chief Ivan Vigibsky noted that the murder was meticulously planned, with the suspect having studied Parubiy’s movements.
Ukrainian Home Minister Igor Klymenko and security services chief Vasyl Maliuk confirmed the suspect’s arrest and indicated the involvement of extensive police resources in capturing him. There are reports suggesting that Parubiy, a prominent pro-Western figure involved in the 2004 and 2014 protests, had been targeted due to his political stance and previous attempts against his life.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, both sides have accused one another of assassinations. Russian media had reportedly sought Parubiy since 2023. His historical significance in advocating for Ukraine’s independence and language rights makes his killing particularly impactful amidst ongoing tensions with Russia.
