Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) clinched a thrilling victory at Limon Piedmont, narrowly overtaking Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) in a dramatic finish, with David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ) finishing third. Despite a crash amid rainy conditions, Vingegaard managed to regain pace and take the leader’s red jersey.
Ciccone initiated the sprint from a reduced peloton, but Vingegaard, feeling strong, successfully navigated ahead despite earlier doubts. Facing slippery roads and crashes, Vingegaard reported only minor bruising from his fall.
During the stage, several riders formed a breakaway, but as the terrain rose and rain intensified, their advantage dwindled. Crashes became common, impacting key riders, including Guillaume Martin, who had to abandon the race.
Vingegaard’s team worked hard to reel in the breakaway, leading to an exciting finish where he outpaced Ciccone and solidified his status as a serious contender in the Vuelta, showing determination right from the start.
