The Port Authority announced the temporary closure of Hobo Kenpass Stop over Labor Day weekend for repairs on a newly installed truck interlock system that has faced repeated mechanical failures since its installation six months ago. This system, which caused a derailment in July due to design issues, will undergo repairs expected to last until September 2. Recent upgrades to the station included concrete platform enhancements, stair replacements, and LED lights.
Port Authority spokesman Seth Stein emphasized accountability for the equipment’s failures. An investigation into the derailment identified design flaws in the guardrail and other components, and the manufacturer is already producing replacement parts.
Andrew Wilson from Bike Hoboken noted that these issues disrupt commuters’ schedules and lead to confusion, making them rely on alternative transport. In the interim, emergency repairs will allow limited train service at reduced speeds and frequency, running every 10 minutes during peak hours. The agency is providing alternative transportation options, including NJ Transit buses, rail services, and discounted ferry tickets, during the closures.
