The Diamondbacks have made several roster changes, including selecting right-handed pitcher Trevor Richards and recalling catcher Adrian Del Castillo. They signed infielder Sergio Alcántara to a major league contract. Infielder Tristin English was also selected, while second baseman Ketel Marte is on the restricted list due to a personal matter, following a break-in at his home during the All-Star break.
The team has struggled with injuries, particularly among their pitching staff, with 11 pitchers currently on the injured list, significantly impacting their season. Arizona’s record stands at 47-50, trailing 5.5 games behind a playoff spot. General Manager Mike Hazen indicated the team might shift towards a seller’s position, which is compounded by losing Marte, one of their key players.
Blaze Alexander is a leading candidate for second base, but Alcántara adds depth to the roster. He has limited experience this season, with a poor batting average in Triple-A. Moreno’s transfer to the 60-day IL is also concerning, as he is sidelined with a hairline fracture in his finger and is not expected to return soon. Del Castillo, despite a solid minor league record, has limited playing time due to injuries. Currently, the team is relying on Jose Herrera and James McCann as catchers, each with mixed performance records.
