A tragic fire at Gabriel House, an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has resulted in the deaths of nine individuals and left over 30 hospitalized. The victims have been identified, including Louis Albernaz (64), Ronald Cordga (61), and Richard Locon (78). The fire broke out on Sunday night, creating chaotic scenes as residents sought escape through windows.
Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon described the situation as “tricky and chaotic,” praising the efforts of first responders, who executed numerous rescues amidst challenging conditions. Five firefighters sustained minor injuries but are expected to recover.
Mayor Paul Coogan and Governor Maura Healy expressed their condolences and admiration for the emergency responders, calling for community support for those affected. A Family Unification Center was established at a local hospital to assist families. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire, and questions remain about the functionality of the building’s smoke detectors.
The facility had previously faced compliance issues, highlighting concerns regarding safety and service. An extensive investigation is underway.
