Former CNN correspondent Charles Bierbauer passed away at the age of 83, as announced by his family. He joined CNN in 1981 and covered significant events including the Pentagon and White House during his 20-year tenure. Notably, he served as a senior White House correspondent under Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush and was president of the White House Correspondents Association from 1991 to 1992. Bierbauer, who won an Emmy for his coverage of the 1996 Olympic Park bombing, was recognized for his outstanding journalism and mentorship.
Before CNN, he had a decade-long international journalism career, including serving as ABC News’ Moscow correspondent. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1966 and held an influential role as the first dean of the University of South Carolina’s Mass Communication and Information Studies. He is survived by his wife, Susanne, and four children. Former CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer remembered Bierbauer as an inspiring mentor.
