NASA’s Artemis II mission is currently underway, with astronauts reporting issues with the Orion capsule’s toilet, which broke down shortly after launch. Engineers believe ice may be obstructing the urine disposal system. Despite the challenges, including reports of odors, mission officials expressed confidence in the astronauts’ training and adaptability.
The mission aims to break records by flying more than 252,000 miles from Earth and making a U-turn behind the moon, a distance currently held by Apollo 13. Commander Reed Wiseman captured an image of Earth from the capsule.
Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is also part of the crew, marking a significant moment as he becomes the first non-American to journey to the moon. He praised the mission’s significance for Canada. The crew includes Christina Koch, the first female astronaut to reach the moon, and Victor Glover, the first Black astronaut to do so.
The approximately 10-day mission will conclude with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean on April 10, serving as a precursor to NASA’s plans for a sustainable moon base by 2028.
