Cuba recently recorded its first subzero temperature, marking a historic cold wave that affected multiple regions, including Florida and parts of Central America. The Indio Hatuey weather station in Perico reported temperatures dropping to 0 degrees Celsius, breaking the country’s previous record low from 1996. Other observatories in Cuba also recorded new low temperatures, with several hitting between 3 to 13.9 degrees Celsius.
The cold front led to agricultural frost and record lows in neighboring areas, like the Bahamas, where Freeport saw its lowest temperature at 51 degrees Fahrenheit. Guatemala and El Salvador also reported record lows due to the outbreak, while Belize experienced its coldest temperature since 1968 at 42 degrees Fahrenheit.
These frigid conditions stemmed from cold fronts that often continue southward after passing through Florida, affecting the Caribbean region. The recent wave was intensified by strong winds, causing flooding in Havana as seawater surged against the city’s waterfront.
