Certain brands of cinnamon pose health risks due to high lead levels, according to a recent FDA warning. The agency identified 16 brands, including HAETAE, Roshni, Durra, and Wise Wife, with lead concentrations ranging from 2.03 ppm to 7.68 ppm, deemed unsafe for long-term consumption. The FDA has requested voluntary recalls, and so far, 10 brands have complied. Consumers are advised to discard any listed products.
Lead contamination in cinnamon can stem from various sources, including lead-absorbing soil and processing equipment. The FDA monitors lead levels in foods and has investigated previous contamination incidents, including in applesauce. Health effects of lead exposure can be severe, especially in children, leading to neurological issues and behavioral problems. Adults also face risks of long-term health problems, including cardiovascular disease.
While the FDA is increasing scrutiny of these products, concerns remain about its staffing and resources amidst planned budget cuts.
