Nearly three and a half years after the tragic shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, a new school, Legacy Elementary, has been completed and is set to open on October 20. A public ceremony was held to introduce the school to the community, attended by families of the victims and survivors.
Legacy Elementary features bulletproof windows and secure access points, emphasizing safety. A central courtyard includes a symbolic tree with two large branches for the teachers and 19 smaller ones for the student victims. Family members have expressed a desire to add the victims’ names to the memorial.
The school was funded through the Uvalde CISD Moving Forward Foundation, which raised $60 million for construction. Security features include cameras and alarms to ensure safety. Officials hope the new school will become a space for joy and learning for the 600 enrolled students, while still acknowledging the painful past. Uvalde CISD Board President Laura Perez emphasized the school as a new beginning, filled with laughter and memories, while recognizing the enduring impact of the tragedy on the community.
