Two elk hunters, Andrew Porter and Ian Stasco, died in southern Colorado due to a lightning strike while hunting near Monte Vista. Connejos County Coroner Richard Martin confirmed their deaths as instantaneous, noting slight burns on one of the bodies. Porter’s fiancée, Bridget Murphy, emphasized their experience in the outdoors and expressed gratitude for the recovery of their bodies.
The men were found on September 18, six days after being reported missing, dressed and with minimal gear. National Weather Service statistics indicate that lightning strikes cause an average of two deaths and 12 injuries annually in Colorado. Safety experts recommend avoiding elevated areas during lightning storms and finding appropriate shelter.
Investigators found no signs of foul play, and an autopsy was performed on Martin’s body. The search was part of a nearly week-long operation in the remote area of Colorado’s South San Juan wilderness. This event highlights the dangers of unpredictable storms in mountainous regions.
