Air Canada announced that operations will gradually resume following an agreement reached early Tuesday, ending a strike by 10,000 flight attendants that disrupted travel for hundreds of thousands. The strike began over the weekend during peak summer travel, affecting about 130,000 travelers daily.
The agreement, facilitated by mediators, resolves key issues, ensuring payment for work done while planes were grounded. Union leaders expressed satisfaction, emphasizing that their rights were upheld through the fight.
CEO Michael Rousseau noted the complexity of restarting operations, estimating that full service restoration could take 7 to 10 days. Customers may experience cancellations as the airline ramps up its schedule, initially focusing on international flights.
Prior to the agreement, Air Canada had already canceled over 1,200 domestic and 1,300 international flights. The company’s operations are expected to stabilize, with additional airport staff deployed to assist passengers. Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed the resolution, hoping it brings relief to affected families and travelers. Passengers can request refunds through Air Canada’s website or mobile app.
