Meta has hired prominent OpenAI researcher Trapit Bansal to join its AI Superintelligence unit, focusing on AI inference models. Bansal, who left OpenAI in June after contributing to its reinforcement learning initiatives and the O1 inference model, brings valuable expertise to Meta, which has recently been building its AI team. The unit includes notable figures like former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang and others from major tech companies.
Despite hiring efforts, Meta does not currently publish AI inference models, which are critical for competing with technologies like OpenAI’s O3 and Deepseek’s R1. Mark Zuckerberg has reportedly offered a $100 million package to attract top researchers. Alongside Bansal, several other former OpenAI researchers have also joined Meta.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented on Meta’s strategy to recruit top talent, suggesting that their best people remain within OpenAI. Meta’s AI Superintelligence Lab aims to enhance its products and develop advanced AI agents under former Salesforce AI chief Clara Shih. However, challenges remain as OpenAI is set to release a new open AI inference model soon.
