The manhunt for Travis Decker, accused of murdering three young girls, has expanded across Washington’s rugged terrain, from the Enchantment to the North Cascade. With over 100 officers involved, the search is complicated by Decker’s military background as a former Army Ranger, skilled in outdoor survival.
Experts from Alderleaf Wilderness College emphasize the importance of a basic survival kit, which includes first aid supplies, water filtration, knives, and other essential gear. Jason Knight, the school’s co-founder, highlights that survival relies not just on equipment, but on training, adaptability, and mental resilience.
Knight explains the “Three-person rule” related to survival timelines: three hours without temperature control, three days without water, and three weeks without food. However, even experienced survivalists face challenges over time due to nutrition and psychological isolation.
The search is ongoing, with authorities offering a $20,000 reward for Decker’s capture, urging anyone who sees him to call 911 rather than approach. The Enchantment area will remain closed to the public as the search continues.
