The Angels made several roster moves, signing Sean Anderson to a contract while recalling Matthew Lugo from Triple-A. To accommodate Anderson, they placed Gustavo Campello on the 10-day injured list due to left ankle inflammation and transferred Ben Joyce to the 60-day IL.
Anderson, 30, previously pitched for multiple teams from 2019-2022, struggling with a 5.84 ERA. He performed better in the KBO this season before returning to the majors briefly with the Rangers and Marlins, giving up 19 runs in 16.1 innings. His current Triple-A performances show a 5.06 ERA, offering the Angels additional bullpen depth.
Lugo, now on the 40-man roster, will soon make his MLB debut. The 24-year-old was traded to the Angels last season and has transitioned from infielder to outfielder, though he struggled at the plate this year with a .656 OPS. His 10-day IL stint comes after five games this season due to an ankle injury.
Ryan Johnson, 22, a second-round draft pick from last year, has also been promoted despite limited minor league appearances. Although promising, he has faced challenges, giving up significant runs recently.
Joyce, 24, has been sidelined for over a month with shoulder inflammation, currently awaiting further evaluation after attempts to throw showed continued discomfort. The Angels are cautious about his recovery moving forward.
