Starting May 7, 2025, Michigan residents will need to have a Real ID-compliant driver’s license or state ID to fly domestically or enter certain federal facilities. Real IDs are identifiable by a star in the top right corner, while older licenses with stars in a gold circle will be phased out by January 2029. Valid extended licenses, U.S. passports, and DHS Trusted Traveler cards are already compliant.
To obtain a Real ID, residents must visit the Secretary of State with their current ID and any legal documents for name changes, if applicable. There’s no additional fee if done during an update or replacement; otherwise, a correction fee applies.
Acceptable forms of identification at TSA checkpoints include various state-issued IDs, U.S. passports, and permanent resident cards, among others. Voting does not require a Real ID; any valid state-issued ID is acceptable. Additionally, permanent residents and other legally present non-U.S. citizens can apply for a Real ID.
