A severe storm system has caused heavy rain, large waves, and tornadoes in Texas and Oklahoma, resulting in three fatalities on Sunday. Communities in these regions are assessing damage from at least 17 reported tornado events, with five occurring in southern Oklahoma. The storm brought significant rainfall, with many areas receiving 2-4 inches, leading to numerous reports of flooding incidents, particularly in Moore, Oklahoma, where two victims were discovered in floodwaters.
In Hughes County, a tornado in Spalding claimed one life and caused extensive damage to homes and infrastructure. The National Weather Service indicated that the tornadoes were at least EF1 in strength, with wind speeds ranging from 86 to 110 mph. The storm system lingered in Texas and Oklahoma, generating flash floods, hail, and tornadoes.
Emergency management officials reported substantial damage in various towns, including Ada, which faced tornado damage just weeks after recovering from a previous storm. As the storm system advanced, it remained active in Arkansas, Missouri, southern Illinois, and southeast Iowa, posing ongoing risks of severe weather. Continued heavy rain is expected throughout the week, raising concerns about further flooding in already saturated areas.
