Mexican drug lord Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada has pleaded guilty in a New York court to charges of drug smuggling and conspiracy, concluding an extensive criminal career as a key figure in the Sinaloa cartel. Once the most powerful drug lord in the world, Zambada apologized for his actions during the court proceedings, acknowledging the harm caused by illegal drugs in the U.S. and Mexico. He recognized his role in fostering corruption through bribery of police and politicians.
Zambada, aged 77, changed his plea after initially pleading not guilty last year. His arrest in Texas followed a betrayal by his former allies, the sons of Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, who was sentenced to life in prison in 2019. Following Zambada’s arrest, the cartel fractured into two factions: one led by him and the other by Guzmán’s sons.
Although facing the possibility of life imprisonment, U.S. prosecutors have indicated they will not seek the death penalty, leading Zambada to seek a more lenient sentence. The plea deal comes amid ongoing negotiations between U.S. officials and Guzmán’s family members, with further developments expected in the drug trafficking landscape. Zambada is set to be sentenced in January 2026.
