A surge of tropical moisture, predicted to lead to severe flash floods, is impacting more than 30 million Americans, particularly in 11 states from the Gulf Coast to the Ohio Valley. The storm, currently referred to as Invest 93L, is set to move through Louisiana by Saturday and then north toward Arkansas. Meteorologists expect up to eight inches of rain in parts of New Orleans and significant rainfall in cities like Chicago, Pittsburgh, and St. Louis.
AccuWeather’s chief meteorologist, Jonathan Porter, noted that 2025 has already seen a dramatic increase in flash flood reports, with figures 70% above the historic average. Previous floods have been deadly, with recent events in Texas resulting in significant casualties. Experts are warning residents, especially in low-lying areas, to prepare for potential evacuation due to flash flood risks, as saturated ground conditions could exacerbate flooding risks.
The storm path data comes from “spaghetti models,” which illustrate various potential storm trajectories based on different weather simulations. NOAA anticipates an above-average hurricane season this year, with predictions of up to 19 named storms.
