At a Sotheby’s auction in New York, a Martian meteorite, NWA 16788, was sold for approximately $5.3 million. Discovered in November 2023 in Niger’s Sahara desert, this 54-pound rock is the largest Martian meteorite on Earth, surpassing previous records. It was initially estimated to fetch between $2 million and $4 million.
In addition to the meteorite, a juvenile Ceratosaurus dinosaur skeleton sold for $30 million, significantly exceeding its $4-6 million estimate. This skeleton, featuring nearly 140 fossil bones and discovered in Wyoming, belonged to a species that lived around 150 million years ago.
Both items were part of Sotheby’s Geek Week, showcasing rare geological and archaeological objects, alongside various other fossils and minerals.
