Despite Rush’s talent, fitting him into the Dodgers’ roster could be challenging, especially with Will Smith established as the regular catcher. While Rush has some experience in different positions, his primary role is behind the plate, where he may split time with Smith. The team also faces injuries to players like Teoscar Hernández and Tommy Edman, opening options for Rush in the outfield.
Burns, a veteran backup catcher, has struggled offensively this season, contributing to the decision to DFA him. At 35, his declining performance and Rush’s rising potential led to Burns being let go. If he clears waivers, he could become a free agent, allowing other teams to sign him at a reduced cost.
