A coalition of UK telecom operators has signed a joint letter urging suppliers to adopt stricter emissions reduction targets in an effort to combat climate change. This initiative, led by the Digital Connections Forum (DCF), aims at encouraging suppliers to disclose greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and establish science-based carbon reduction targets. The letter has been endorsed by major companies including BT Group, Virgin Media O2 (VMO2), Vodafone, and Sky.

The DCF’s 2024 report indicates that a significant portion of emissions, particularly Scope 3 emissions related to the supply chain, pose a challenge for telecommunications companies. These emissions are often underestimated and difficult to address compared to direct emissions from company operations (Scope 1) or purchased electricity (Scope 2).

While the letter calls for action, it allows companies and suppliers the discretion to determine their compliance, leading some to view the initiative as more of a symbolic gesture rather than a binding commitment. DCF Head Alex Mother expressed optimism about promoting meaningful collaboration across the supply chain. Major telecom companies like BT and VMO2 have set their own ambitious carbon reduction goals, with BT aiming for net zero on scopes 1 and 2 by 2031 and VMO2 targeting net zero by 2025 for its operations, although both companies face challenges with Scope 3 emissions.
