Sudan’s military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, visited the Presidential Palace in Khartoum for the first time since the war began almost two years ago. His visit followed his recapture by the Army and was marked by his declaration of Khartoum’s “freedom” from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The military had previously relocated to Port Sudan after the RSF seized control of the capital early in the conflict. Since then, the Army has been swiftly reclaiming areas in Khartoum, including the airport and essential bridges across the Nile, with reports suggesting RSF fighters are retreating. The situation in Khartoum remains dire, with ongoing reports of mass looting, civilian casualties from bombardments, and deteriorating humanitarian conditions. Despite the Army’s recent victories, the RSF retains control over most of Darfur, indicating that the conflict is far from over, exacerbated by foreign arms support and failed peace mediation efforts.
