Ukrainian forces attacked the Engels-2 air base in Russia’s Saratov region this week, resulting in significant damage visible in new satellite imagery. The strike, which Ukraine claims aimed to degrade Russia’s military capabilities, particularly targeting ammunition and weapons storage areas, reportedly caused fires and secondary explosions, damaging buildings and bunkers. This marks the third attack on the airfield this year, with previous strikes occurring in January. Russian officials acknowledged the incident as the “largest UAV attack ever.”
Engels-2 serves as a base for TU-95 and TU-160 bombers, used by Russia for missile strikes against Ukrainian targets, including civilian areas. In response to previous attacks, Russia has increased its defensive measures, such as moving aircraft eastward and implementing protective measures on bomber aircraft.
The attack on the base occurred amid heightened military activity, with Russia’s Ministry of Defense reporting that 134 drones were intercepted in multiple regions. Concurrently, Ukraine reported heavy missile and drone assaults from Russia as both nations discussed a potential limited ceasefire, mediated by the US. While Kyiv showed interest in a 30-day ceasefire, Russia continued its strikes against Ukraine’s infrastructure.
