Dr. Lasha Alawie, an assistant professor at Brown Medicine, was deported to Lebanon despite holding a valid H-1B visa. After visiting her family in Lebanon, she was detained for 36 hours at Boston Logan International Airport upon her return. A federal court had previously issued an order to halt her deportation, which was allegedly ignored by Customs and Border Protection (CBP). According to her court petition, Alawie was detained without justification and denied access to her attorney. The CBP stated that individuals seeking entry must demonstrate their admissibility to the U.S.
Alawie’s legal representatives filed a notice of violation against the court order, requesting her immediate return to Massachusetts and an emergency hearing. Brown University expressed concern over the treatment of Alawie, emphasizing her responsibilities as an assistant professor and the support provided by her colleagues in her absence. The U.S. District Court is scheduled to hold a hearing on the matter.
