California lawmakers are expressing concerns about the state’s transportation system after three unexpected closures of Interstate 5 in Southern California within three months. Sen. Katherine Breakspear, leading the inquiry, sent a letter to the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans), California Highway Patrol, and San Diego Police regarding the impact of these closures, which are significant for connecting San Diego, Orange County, and Los Angeles.
The closures included one for a U.S. Marine Corps anniversary event and two caused by police operations. The first closure on October 18 was criticized for last-minute notification. Subsequent police-related closures on November 22 and December 5 also faced complaints regarding insufficient communication.
Lawmakers requested clearer policies and procedures to manage such situations better, emphasizing the need for improved decision-making, timely responses, and public communication during highway closures.
