His defensive skills allow him to play multiple infield positions, although the crowded infield initially posed a challenge.
Despite a slow start in spring training, hitting .200 but showing good power and patience at the plate, Weatherholt’s overall performance has led to him securing a spot on the major league roster. The Cardinals aim to utilize him as part of their long-term strategy while maintaining a focus on rebuilding their core.
In other news, Velasquez’s non-selection for the roster is unexpected, especially after a strong spring training showing (.357/.449/.667). The team needs to clear a spot for Weatherholt, which might involve other roster moves, including sending Velasquez to the minors without using a roster slot.
