In Lake Hughes, authorities uncovered a significant animal rescue operation after long-standing neighbor complaints regarding a property plagued by wind and incessant barking from numerous dogs. Approximately 250 dogs and 66 cats were recovered during a search warrant executed by Los Angeles County Animal Care and Control, although initial estimates had projected up to 700 animals on the site. Investigators were responding to allegations of animal abuse, neglect, and overcrowding.
The operation was described as one of the largest in county history, with officials noting that the conditions were deplorable, requiring rescuers to wear protective gear. Some animals were found deceased, but the exact number was unknown. The rescue involved over 70 personnel and multiple agencies, with animals being examined on-site and transferred to various animal shelters for rehabilitation and adoption efforts.
Christine De Anda, associated with the nonprofit Rock N’ Paws Animal Rescue, reportedly managed the animals but could not be contacted for comments. Officials highlighted that the situation exemplified a failed rescue attempt that spiraled into hoarding. This incident marks one of several large-scale rescues the county has conducted, with officials committing to expedite the animals’ availability for adoption due to the overwhelming numbers. Los Angeles County Supervisor Kathryn Berger emphasized the collaboration among agencies to protect these vulnerable animals.
