Castro, who recently turned 29, has shown versatility as a multi-position player over three successful years. He performed well after being traded to the Minnesota Twins in early 2023, appearing in 124 games with a .257/.339/.411 batting line and 33 stolen bases. However, he struggled after being traded to the Chicago Cubs later that season, hitting just .170 over a limited number of at-bats.
The Rockies aim to strengthen their roster after a disappointing season with 119 losses. Although Castro had a rough end to the 2023 season, his past performance could be valuable for a team focused more on development than contention. He is expected to rotate through various positions depending on the performance of Colorado’s other players.
The Rockies currently have a projected annual salary of $110 million and are exploring further additions to their roster, particularly in pitching and infield positions. Other teams interested in Castro included Atlanta and Pittsburgh, but the Rockies ultimately secured him at a contract slightly below early offseason predictions.
