Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy reported that heavy Russian drone and missile attacks left hundreds of thousands in the Kyiv region without power as freezing temperatures set in. Approximately 500 high-rise buildings lacked heating, affecting even critical infrastructure. More than 300 drones and multiple missiles targeted eight regions, including Kyiv, focusing on energy facilities.
Residents are facing severe cold, with many households experiencing lengthy power outages. One resident, Katerina Sergean, described the uncomfortable conditions, relying on minimal battery-powered heating.
Zelenskyy also noted that four people died in a missile attack in the Kharkiv region, and energy facilities in Zaporizhzhya were targeted, injuring two workers. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Shirsky stated that the front lines remain challenging while the enemy attacks energy infrastructure during the harsh winter. In response, Russia claimed its attacks were aimed at Ukrainian military energy facilities due to previous Ukrainian strikes on Russian infrastructure.
Additionally, Russian officials in Belgorod warned of potential evacuations due to power supply issues stemming from Ukrainian attacks.
