Brooks Koepka, a five-time major champion, has become the first player to leave LIV Golf, raising concerns about the league’s future. LIV Golf announced that Taylor Gooch will succeed him as captain of Koepka’s Smash Team, and CEO Scott O’Neill stated that Koepka’s departure was mutual, citing a prioritization of family time. Koepka’s contract details were not disclosed, but he reportedly had one year remaining after joining in June 2022.
Amid the uncertain implications for his career, Koepka is expected to reapply for membership with the PGA Tour, which has seen unprecedented policy changes allowing players who leave to transfer back. He previously expressed frustration with the progress of LIV Golf and had a lackluster performance in 2025, finishing 31st in the league standings.
PGA Tour officials noted Koepka’s proactive communication about his departure, and while his future remains uncertain, he continues to support LIV Golf and intends to keep fans updated on his plans. With Koepka’s exit, the league’s prominent figures will be Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. LIV is also awaiting news regarding its application for inclusion in the Official World Golf Ranking System.
