Ukrainian navy drones targeted two tankers, Kairos and Virat, in the Black Sea as they headed to Russian ports to load oil for foreign markets. These tankers, both operating under sanctions, were reportedly empty and heading toward Novorossiysk, Russia’s main oil terminal. Video footage showed one of the drones striking a tanker, resulting in a significant explosion that caused extensive damage. Ukrainian officials stated this would severely impact Russian oil shipping.
Over recent months, Ukraine has been striking Russian oil facilities with long-range drones, but the attack on the tankers marks a shift in strategy. Kyiv has urged the West to act against Russia’s “shadow fleet,” which comprises unregulated vessels aiding Russia in circumventing sanctions.
In a related incident, the Caspian Sea Pipeline Consortium halted operations after a drone attack damaged its facilities in the Black Sea. The 274-meter Kairos tanker experienced an explosion while traveling from Egypt to Russia, leading to crew evacuation and firefighting efforts. The Virat suffered minor damage after being attacked again shortly after. Both ships are on a sanctions list from 2022.
Turkey expressed alarm, as the attacks occurred in its exclusive economic zone, and is coordinating with other nations to address the situation and protect its interests. Ukrainian officials did not disclose the exact timing of the attacks, and Russia has not publicly commented.
