A tragic shark attack occurred early Thursday morning at Kailey’s Beach in Cloudy Bay National Park, Australia, where a woman was killed and a man seriously injured while swimming. They were in their mid-20s and knew each other. Emergency services arrived promptly, but the woman died at the scene; the man was hospitalized in serious but stable condition, benefiting from bystander-administered first aid.
The shark, identified as a large bull shark, prompted local authorities to close the beach for swimming and deploy drumlines to capture any sharks in the area. Experts noted that it is extremely rare for a single shark to attack multiple people, and the situation is under investigation to understand the reasons behind the attack.
The identities of the victims have not been released, but they are reportedly Swiss nationals. The Swiss Consulate in Sydney is assisting their relatives.
