Cruising is advancing towards environmentally friendly technologies, with luxury and exploration at the forefront. Notably, two new expedition cruise ships, the Magellan Discoverer and the Captain Arctic, are among the most eco-friendly vessels launched.
The ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia, Chile, is unveiling the Magellan Discoverer on October 24, 2023, for Antarctica21, scheduled to enter service in November 2026. This 94-meter (308-foot) ship is the first polar cruise vessel to combine diesel and electric power. It features ABB’s Azipod technology and a state-of-the-art energy storage system using marine-grade lithium batteries, optimizing engine efficiency and minimizing emissions. With a capacity for 96 passengers, the ship boasts luxury amenities like private balconies, a panoramic lounge, and a science laboratory.
Similarly, the Captain Arctic, built by Gortens Dubai, is set to be a near-zero emissions exploration vessel for SELAR. Its hull is being prepared for outfitting at the Chantiers Naval de l’Ocean Indégend shipyard in Mauritius. Equipped with wind propulsion, solar panels, and advanced waste management systems, this 70-meter (230-foot) ship plans to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 90%. Accommodating 36 passengers and 24 crew, it is scheduled for completion in August 2026, with plans for adventurous winter cruises in 2027.
Both ships signify significant advancements in sustainable shipping technologies within the luxury cruise segment.
