A historic building in Stuart, Iowa, known for its notorious connection to Bonnie and Clyde, is undergoing revitalization by local couple Wes and Abby Duncan. This building, which dates back to 1882 and has served various purposes, was at risk of demolition before the Duncans saved it through their construction company. Local historian Robert Cook emphasized the building’s importance to the community, advocating for its continued use.
While the Duncans are renovating the property, they have no plans to operate a business themselves. Instead, they hope someone will open a café or another venture within the space. They also envision the upstairs can function as an Airbnb or apartments. The renovation will incorporate the building’s historical significance, featuring murals and decorative elements referencing Bonnie and Clyde. The project has support from the Iowa Economic Development Authority and the City of Stuart, with renovations designed to restore the building’s 1934 appearance.
