Cleveland Guardians pitchers Emmanuel Clase and Luis Ortiz have been indicted on charges of fraud, conspiracy, and bribery related to a scheme designed to manipulate pitch outcomes, misleading gamblers into winning significant sums. Ortiz was arrested in Boston and is set to appear in court, while Clase is not in custody.
Federal prosecutors allege that as early as May 2023, Clase coordinated with bettors to intentionally throw specific pitches, allowing gamblers to profit from prop bets. Ortiz joined the scheme later, resulting in gamblers winning at least $450,000. Both pitchers could face severe penalties, including up to 20 years in prison for various charges, which also encompass conspiracy to influence a sporting event through bribery.
Following allegations of cheating related to pitches thrown by Ortiz, both players were placed on paid administrative leave by Major League Baseball (MLB) in July. The MLB has been fully cooperating with federal authorities throughout the investigation.
This incident marks one of the most severe gambling-related allegations in baseball since Pete Rose’s permanent ban in 1989. The Guardians stated they are aware of the situation and will continue to cooperate as the investigation unfolds.
