A UPS cargo plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, resulting in at least 12 fatalities, including children. Federal investigators reported that a fire erupted in the left wing before the engine detached, leading to the crash. Emergency responders found little hope for survival as the plane exploded and debris spread over a half-mile radius, impacting nearby businesses.
The aircraft had three crew members aboard and was en route to Honolulu. Witnesses described the terrifying moments of hearing an explosion and seeing flames. While authorities have identified some victims, they believe the death toll may rise and are investigating the cause of the fire and engine failure. The case has similarities to a 1979 crash involving an American Airlines flight under similar circumstances. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will continue to investigate, which could take over a year.
