In recent weeks, an increase in drone sightings near Danish airports, including Aalborg and Billund, has caused significant disruptions to air travel, reminiscent of past incidents at London’s Gatwick Airport. These drones have also been spotted near military bases housing Denmark’s F-16 and F-35 jets. In response to the threats, commercial drone flights have been banned ahead of the EU summit in Copenhagen on October 1.
The Danish government suspects these incidents may be part of a broader Russian hybrid operation aimed at instilling fear and disrupting defenses. Questions are arising about effective countermeasures, including the possibility of shooting down drones or employing jamming technologies to disrupt their signals. However, targeting drones presents challenges; shooting them down risks collateral damage, while jamming could affect nearby aircraft as well.
New technologies, like long-range lasers and advanced jamming systems, are being developed to provide more effective solutions, but their implementation in civilian contexts may take time. As a result, disruptions caused by drone activities are likely to persist in the near future.
