Tropical Storm Lorenzo formed in the central Atlantic Ocean on October 13, 2025, with maximum wind speeds of 50 mph and a northwestward movement. Predicted to peak as a high-grade tropical depression on Thursday, Lorenzo poses no threat to land. Its formation date is close to the average for the 12th named storm of the season. The current Atlantic hurricane season has produced 12 named storms and 4 hurricanes, nearing average conditions.
Lorenzo’s development is notable as it formed late in the season and in a rare location, having occurred only once before in 2003. Additionally, another unusual storm, Subtropical Cyclone Karen, formed far north of typical storm zones just four days earlier.
A tropical wave from the west coast of Africa is expected to approach the Lesser Antilles next week, with potential for cyclone formation. Residents are advised to monitor updates on this emerging disturbance.
