Pope Leo XIV is set to make his first foreign trip to Turkey and Lebanon, focusing on promoting peace and Christian unity in the region. The trip, planned for November 27 – December 2, will commemorate the 1,700th anniversary of the Nicaea Council, a significant moment in Catholic and Orthodox relations.
Pope Leo emphasized his commitment to bringing hope to Lebanon, a country facing political instability and a significant Christian presence. Lebanon has struggled with an economic crisis and ongoing tensions with Israel and Hezbollah, making the Pope’s visit timely.
Patriarch Bechara Boutros Rai expressed optimism that the visit would foster unity among Lebanese people of all faiths.
The trip comes amid heightened sensitivity surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly following the October 7 Hamas attacks. While the Vatican condemned the attacks as terrorism, it also criticized Israel for its actions in Gaza, calling for a reduction in violence and a focus on peace. Pope Leo reiterated the importance of dialogue and understanding in seeking solutions.
