The Israeli military intercepted nine convoys attempting to breach the naval blockade of Gaza, capturing around 145 activists from the Freedom Platoon Coalition on Wednesday. The activists, including European parliamentarians and climate change advocate Greta Thunberg, were reportedly in good health and set for deportation. This latest flotilla aimed to deliver humanitarian aid but was intercepted approximately 120 nautical miles off Gaza’s coast.
Turkey condemned the interception as “piracy,” asserting it violated international law and heightened tensions. A joint statement from European parliamentarians criticized the actions as unlawful and called for the release of detained activists. Meanwhile, negotiations between Israel and Hamas resumed in Egypt amid ongoing violence, with Israel’s blockade of Gaza continuing to draw criticism for its humanitarian impact. Activists plan to continue their efforts to establish a humanitarian corridor by sea.
