According to a report by the Guardian, environmental activist Greta Tanberg is reportedly undergoing strict medical treatment while in Israeli custody after being detained while part of a humanitarian aid fleet to Gaza. Israel allegedly forced her and other detainees to participate in degrading acts, including being photographed while raising an unidentified flag. During visits from Swedish officials, Tanberg spoke of dehydration and poor conditions in her cell, infested with bedbugs, and described the inadequate supply of food and water. Other detainees corroborated claims of physical abuse and mistreatment.
Tanberg was among 437 activists arrested by Israeli forces, with most detained at a high-security prison primarily used for Palestinian prisoners. Reports indicate that standards of treatment for the activists have been violated—many were denied access to food, water, and legal representation. The Swedish embassy has been in contact with Israeli authorities, emphasizing the need for humane treatment of detainees. In response to allegations of mistreatment, the Israeli embassy described these claims as false, asserting detainees were afforded their rights and access to necessities.
Israeli officials, including far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, escalated tensions by labeling the activists as “terrorists.” Legal representatives have raised concerns about the treatment of detainees, particularly as this marks another instance of activists being arrested during similar attempts to breach the Gaza blockade.
